The Breathing Space Collection

I can see why the collection is so aptly called "Breathing Space" as looking at it and handling it gives you time out from the world and its problems.”

Polished by hand to a silky smooth finish, this collection of porcelain sculpture seeks to capture quietness in reaction to the constant noise of modern living, thus creating breathing space. Tactile and silky smooth, this series of slip cast forms is inspired by walks on windswept beaches, where I go to clear my mind, and literally find a little breathing space.

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t attracted to a smooth pebble. I seem to be incapable of leaving a beach without a new pebble in my pocket, carefully chose for pattern, colour or feel, such is my love of tactile things. It seemed natural then to create a range of forms inspired by, and actually created around beach pebbles.  I am always delighted by the surprised look on peoples faces when they pick up a piece, they are deceptively light, being cast as hollow forms. Then the magic happens as they stroke the form and enjoy a moment of calm, finding a little breathing space of their own.

Designed to sooth, to stack, to be touched, loved and maybe even used, each of these sculptures is capable of holding something, of being functional. I deliberately made them that way, it’s the rebel in me challenging the boundaries of fine art and applied art, of sculpture and function.

Each piece is individually decorated, fired to high temperature without glaze and polished by hand to achieve a satin finish. Each piece stands alone as a vessel, whilst some can be interlocked to create sculptural stacks. The collection has a contemporary feel complimenting both urban and coastal interiors
